Did Napoleon and Louis XV make monumental decisions by the flickering light of a Cire Trudon candle? This is highly likely since this French company, founded in 1643, had a cult following including Louis XV and Napoleon because of Cire Trudon’s unique style. It’s a startling thought to see the same thing that they might have seen back then
Since 2007, Cire Trudon turned their focus onto crafting fragranced wax candles, and while their manufacturing processes may have evolved, the company’s passion and attention to detail has gone unwavered.
With their wax replicas of busts by famous sculptors, Cire Trudon has created some fascinating objects for your home. In keeping with their origins each one comes with a wick but lighting them would surely seem almost cruel.
This bust is of Alexandre, one of the children of the famous French architect Alexandre- Théodore Brongniart (1739-1813), who designed the Stock Exchange building in Paris and transformed the Père Lachaise Cemetery. It’s a wax replica of a work by Jean-Antoine Houdon.
Considered to be the Sculptor of the Enlightenment, Houdon fixed in stone the portraits of important figures of the time, including the Tsarina Catherine the Great of Russia, Diderot, Voltaire and Rousseau. As the most brilliant portraitist of the 18th century, throughout his life, Houdon maintained a strong interest in the theme of childhood. The portrait of Alexandre, created in 1777 expresses with strength and tenderness, this passion for a subject that never became old-fashioned.
